Basic Mathematics for Dummies

Hello there. I know that lots and lots of books have been written for dummies but I decided to write my experience as a Maths teacher for 27 years not counting the years back in school where my mates copied my homework daily. By the way, she became a french teacher somewhere far away.

1.Maths is easy . Only ten numbers starting from 0 to 10. Any prob? No...
2. next when the teacher explain... listen not to copy every single thing that he/ she writes. Maths is easy cos only one or two method lead to the answer. No short cut like London Weight Management.

3.Read the question assuming that all students can read. Look for the KEY WORDS. It is there somewhere. Pin up the hair especially vain girls in class.

4. Focus. Boys look at the board and not the pretty ones in front. Average students cannot see that x+x= 2x. My students think that using unknown in sentence give them nightmare. One student proudly told me that is why  always x and y?

5. Practice is the game to go. Even footballers have to practice daily.

6. Homework is really to do by yourself and NOT copied from your buddies. I remember my form 5 boy which I shall call him C gave a new formulae for my matrices topic and gladly hand in the work. Even his buddy , Z had the same but wrong formulae. OMG. I asked from which part of the world is this from? Two faces looked at me.
Do the homework by yourself. Ask for help pls.

7. Learn from mistakes. It is vital to ask and practise again again.
Once, I coached a form 5 student to score A in SPM was just doing the past year questions for 4 times in 10 months. Thank God. He did scored an A for himself.

8. Maths is easy if the students are open to learn.

9. I know beginning is a tough road but once a student see the way out of the tunnel, I as the teacher is happy.

10. Lastly to all teachers out there, make the students like the subject first by liking you. Give them respect as an adult and everything goes smoothly( hopefully)
